Public & Professional Writing Certificate

UMA’s Public and Professional Writing (PPW) certificate is designed for students in and beyond the English major who would like to develop their writing skills for workplace and community contexts, specifically. The PPW certificate offers a way for students to flag their written communication skills when on the job market; additionally, individuals already well along their career path or considering a career change may wish to complete the PPW certificate in order to bolster their marketability in business and professional environments.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will have developed:

  • A working knowledge of writing genres in various public and professional contexts.
  • A stronger sense of how to tailor public and professional writing to meet specific audience needs and demographics.
  • Practice with document design and common workplace tools for organizing and delivering written communication.
  • A greater awareness of how to professionalize oneself through effective, thoughtful, and polished writing.
  • A portfolio of writing projects that showcases their abilities and interests across a range of topics and genres in public and professional writing.

UMA Certificate Requirements


Minimum 50% of the required courses taken through UMA

Minimum 2.00 GPA in the certificate

Prerequisite:


To ensure success, students should fulfill the prerequisite courses before the requirements.

  • ENG 101  or program-approved equivalent
