First Year Requirements:

Complete a program overview meeting with Cindy Dean (required prior to enrolling in EDU courses)
EDU 100 - Introduction to UMA Teacher Education 1 CR
EDU 200W - Diversity, Poverty, and Cultural Competence 3 CR

Other pre-candidacy courses:

Complete one of the following:

Additional Requirements:

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (taken anytime in pre-candidacy phase)
Criminal History Record Check
GPA of 2.5 overall & 2.5 in education courses
Complete application to candidacy

Candidacy phase (33 credits)

EDU 160 - Perspectives on Infants, Toddlers and Young Children 3 CR
EDU 263 - Play: The Roots of Learning 3 CR
EDU 326 - Observation and Assessment of Young Children 3 CR
EDU 325 - Social Studies and the Project Approach for the Young Children 3 CR
EDU 327 - Mathematics for Young Children 3 CR
EDU 329 - Science and the Project Approach for the Young Child 3 CR
EDU 362 - Language and Literacy in Early Childhood 3 CR
EDU 363 - Young Children with Special Needs 3 CR
EDU 366 - Children’s and Young Adult Literature 3 CR
EDU 345W - Child Development 3 CR
Praxis II Content Assessment (taken anytime in candidacy phase)
GPA 3.0 in education courses and GPA 2.5 overall

Complete one of the following (3):

Additional Requirements:

Complete any English course 3 CR
Complete any Mathematics course 3 CR MAT 130 and/or MAT 131 recommended
Complete any Science course 3 CR
Complete any Social Studies course (anthropology, geography, history or political science) 3 CR

Minor Advising Notes:

A minimum of 25% of the credits required for a minor needs to be earned at UMA for it to be awarded.
A student may be awarded any minor as long as no more than six credits of the minor can be used to fulfill the requirements of the student’s major or concentration.
