Admission Criteria:
- Complete and submit Intent to Declare Minor or Certificate of Study
- Schedule meeting with Coordinator of Teacher Education
Minor Requirements (57-59 credit hours):

Pre-candidacy phase (14-16 credits)
Pre-Candidacy Phase Requirements:
- Complete all pre-candidacy EDU courses with a grade of B- or better
- Complete all core and general education classes
- Grade of C or better in ENG 101
- Grade of C or better in mathematics (MAT 1xx)
- GPA requirement met: 2.5 overall; 2.75 in education courses
- Demonstrate proficiency on all key assessments

Candidacy Phase Requirements:
- Complete all candidacy EDU courses with a grade of B- or better

- CHRC approval documentation uploaded to Taskstream®
Candidacy phase - combination of UMA and UMM courses (31 credits)
- EDU 387 - Teaching the Exceptional Child in the Regular Classroom 3 CR
- SED 330 - Teaching Math in Special Ed 3 CR via UMM
- SED 340 - Communication & Collaboration in Special Education 3 CR via UMM
- SED 370 - Teaching Reading/Writing to Children with Special Needs 3 CR via UMM
- SED 420 - Special Education Law 3 CR via UMM
- SED 425 - Assessment in Special Education 3 CR via UMM
- SED 435 - Program Planning for Students with Disabilities 3 CR via UMM
- EDU 445 - Behavioral Support Systems and Strategies 3 CR via UMM
- EDU 395 - Field Experience Seminar 4 CR EDU 250 and EDU 251 , and application required for enrollment
Complete one of the following courses (3) via UMM:
- SED 362 - Typical and Atypical Expressive & Receptive Language
- SED 365 - Differentiated Instructional Strategies
- SED 380 - Teaching Students w/ Autism Spectrum Disorders
- SED 455 - Transitional Issues for Students with Disabilities
Additional requirements
- GPA of 2.5 overall & 2.75 in education courses
- Complete application for student teaching
Student Teaching phase
- SED 490 - Student Teaching in Special Education 12 CR via UMM
- Principles of Learning and teaching (taken any time before application for MDOE certification)
Minor Advising Notes:
- A minimum of 25% of the credits required for a minor needs to be earned at UMA for it to be awarded.
- A student may be awarded any minor as long as no more than six credits of the minor can be used to fulfill the requirements of the student’s major or concentration.
