Program Objectives

The Aviation Program provides a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation to students desiring to become FAA certified commercial pilots while earning a comprehensive baccalaureate degree from an accredited university. The B.S. in Aviation is completed in two steps. First, through UMA’s Private Pilot course at the Brunswick Executive Airport. This will be the first exposure of the student to the rigors of flight training and the student will learn the discipline that must be formed to succeed as a professional pilot. Remaining ratings (Instrument) and certifications (Commercial and Certified Instructor Pilot) are earned through a partnership with Maine Instrument Flight (MIF), located at the Augusta Airport.

Students will be trained for employment within the aviation industry. With the certifications and ratings earned through completion of this program, graduates will have earned credentials needed to pursue employment as: cargo pilot, charter pilot, passenger operations pilot, military pilot, flight instructor, aerial photographer, agricultural operations pilot, traffic & news reporting pilot, public safety pilot, wildlife service pilot, tour pilot, remote location pilot and eventually as airline pilots after earning their Airline Transport Pilot rating. Many aviation occupations require bachelor’s degrees as well as certification. Additionally, young graduates would be well qualified to compete for military pilot training slots.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the degree, graduates will:

qualify for employment in the air transportation industry
qualify as instructors to others under FAA certification
understand the physical, meteorological, mathematical, legal, security and historical aspects of flight
serve as role models demonstrating the highest ethical and professional standards

Academic Advising

Aviation majors are required to meet with their advising team (aviation program advisor and admissions counselor) prior to registration for courses. The advising team will have the best interests of the student as its primary objective. The advising team will recommend courses, but the student must take the leading role in course selection. Students are encouraged to continue to meet with their advisor team on a regular basis to ensure a productive and meaningful college experience.
