ENG 250W - Survey of American Literature I: The Colonial Era to the Civil War

3 CR

This course surveys U.S. literature from the moment of contact between indigenous peoples and European Colonizers through the American Civil War.  Students will explore a variety of authors, literary movements, and historical contexts, including colonial, revolutionary era, transcendental movement, and the American Renaissance.  Attention will be paid to the ways in which cultural, ethnic, class, status, and gendered identities, among others, affect the creation of national literatures.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 102W .
