American studies is a critical interdisciplinary field that asks us to reckon with America’s past, present, and future. This course considers ideas, texts, themes, and movements in order to better understand what “America” is below the surface of patriotism and idealism. Our study of America considers power and politics, identity and culture, and ideology and activism with an emphasis on power dynamics between those with the most power and those with the least.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 or permission of instructor.
