Pre-candidacy phase (14-16 credits)

First Year Requirements:

Complete a program overview meeting with Cindy Dean (required prior to enrolling in EDU courses)
EDU 100 - Introduction to UMA Teacher Education 1 CR
EDU 200W - Diversity, Poverty, and Cultural Competence 3 CR

Other pre-candidacy courses:

Complete one of the following courses (1-3):

Additional Requirements:

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (taken anytime in pre-candidacy phase)
Criminal History Record Check
GPA of 2.5 overall & 2.5 in education courses
Complete application to candidacy

Candidacy phase (31 credits)

EDU 341 - Teaching Writing in Grades K-8: Process to Product 3 CR
EDU 345W - Child Development 3 CR
EDU 351 - Teaching Reading in Elementary School 3 CR
EDU 361 - Teaching Science in Elementary School 3 CR
EDU 366 - Children’s and Young Adult Literature 3 CR
EDU 371 - Teaching Social Studies in Elementary School 3 CR
EDU 375 - Managing K-12 Classrooms with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) 3 CR
EDU 381 - Teaching Mathematics in Elementary School 3 CR
EDU 387 - Teaching the Exceptional Child in the Regular Classroom 3 CR
EDU 395 - Field Experience Seminar 4 CR application required for enrollment

Additional Requirements:

Praxis II Content Assessment (taken anytime in candidacy phase)
GPA of 2.5 overall & 3.0 in education courses
Complete application for student teaching

Student Teaching phase

EDU 399 - Student Teaching Seminar 3 CR taken concurrently with EDU 491
EDU 491 - Student Teaching Elementary K-8 9 CR application required for enrollment

Additional Requirements:

General education courses needed for certification:

Complete any two English courses 6 CR
Complete any two Mathematics courses 6 CR MAT 130 & MAT 131 recommended
Complete any two Science courses 6 CR
Complete any two Social Studies courses (anthropology, geography, history or political science) 6 CR

Minor Advising Notes:

A minimum of 25% of the credits required for a minor needs to be earned at UMA for it to be awarded.
A student may be awarded any minor as long as no more than six credits of the minor can be used to fulfill the requirements of the student’s major or concentration.
