WGS 335 - Disability History and the Modern Disability Justice Movement

This course focuses on the history of mentally and physically disabled people in the United States. Our goal will be to center the stories and lived experiences of disabled people as they navigated often hostile systems and institutions from the early 1800s to the present. For the first seven weeks, we will explore topics such as eugenics, race science, and histories of institutionalization that have shaped modern ableism. The second half of the course will focus on the principles and diverse leaders of the modern disability justice movement. (This course is cross-listed with AME 335, HTY 335 and INT 335.)

Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 and HTY 103 or HTY 104.
